Language is our greatest technological advance. After decades of step-by-step improvements, computers seem to have taken a sudden, giant leap towards mastery of this most human of creations.
The waves of AI-generated content are already impacting business and society. Overtone doesn’t think that ‘AI will take all our jobs’. This is unhelpful fear-mongering. But we do take the view that people who use AI effectively will replace many of the people who do not.
With all that in mind, it is clear we need more, and better, tools to find, filter and sort through the oceans of content. Overtone has already got to work. We’ll be sharing more in coming newsletters and LinkedIn.
In this newsletter, we take a look at how our algorithms filter through content on generative AI. Stay tuned as we show you our work on filtering content by generative AI. To read more about the generative generation, check out our recent blog post:
Industries
Music industry
ChatGPT’s potential in the music industry can impact writing, engagement and template culture. Musicians are able to interact with ChatGPT and request the generation of lyrics. However, not all artists are viewing this advancement positively, Nick Cave describes AI songwriting as ‘a grotesque mockery’:
Education
ChatGPT is changing the way students are studying and education institutes are having to act quick. The Stanford Daily have reported that Stanford students have already used the AI bot for their final exams:
Scores of Stanford students used ChatGPT on final exams, survey suggests
Science
ChatGPT has made its formal debut in scientific literature, which has sparked questioning whether it’s appropriate to cite the bot as an author. Nature covers this issue and the policies and ethics surrounding the use of the bot:
ChatGPT listed as author on research papers: many scientists disapprove
Politics
This piece from Campaigns & Elections touches on the Metaphorical Political machine as well as the Digital One (ChatGPT), discussing the streamlining of the campaign process:
It’s 2023. Consultants, Welcome to the Machine
Healthcare
In the healthcare industry the AI Chatbot is deemed a game changer due to its fluency and creativity. NBC news covers an experiment ran by Koko, an online emotional support chat service, whereby GPT-3 responded to users, causing intense controversy:
Intellectual property
AI art tools databases are developed via scraping content from the web, often without explicit permission from the artists who created images. Here Gizmodo investigates whether algorithms violate copyright law:
Do AI Art Tools Break Copyright Laws? Two New Lawsuits Will Find Out.
War
Cybercriminals are also starting to take advantage of this machine learning technology. Tech Wire Asia reported a warning from Check Point Research (CPR) about cybercriminals using the model’s capabilities to develop an automatic encryption tool and scripts for a dark web marketplace:
Exploiting ChatGPT: How Russian cybercriminals are using the OpenAI API in dark web operations
Film
As ChatGPT advances, top film and TV writers are skeptical that the tech imperils their livelihoods. The Hollywood Reporter covers whether talent advocates should be proactive about setting rules of engagement for writer:

Overtone Updates
Last week Overtone’s co-founders took part in the Eagle Alpha Alternative Data Conference in New York We were pleased to have been invited to present our work on qualitative data to an audience of (mostly) quantitative financial professionals.
In the image below, Philip is discussing why human-focused metrics are more important than ever to include in content analytics. If you’re interested in learning more, sign up to be the first to read the whitepaper outlining our research.
Additionally, Christopher attended the WAN IFRA Media Lab in Hamburg, where Overtone was selected to present as a promising startup:
